Stop taking water for granted

Steve Rennie, The Canadian Press

OTTAWA - Canada's stores of fresh water are not as plentiful as once thought, and water shortages threaten to pinch the economy and pit provinces against each other, says a newly released document.

An internal report drafted last December by Environment Canada warns that climate change and a growing population will further drain resources.

"We can no longer take our extensive water supplies for granted," says the report, titled A Federal Perspective on Water Quantity Issues.

The Canadian Press obtained the 21-page draft report under the Access to Information Act.

It suggests the federal government take a more hands-on role in managing the country's water, which is now largely done by the provinces. Ottawa still manages most of the fresh water in the North through water boards.

The Conservatives promised a national water strategy in last fall's throne speech but have been criticized since for announcing only piecemeal projects.

The Tories, like the previous Liberal government, are also behind in publishing annual reports required by law that show how water supplies are used and maintained.

The last assessment posted on Environment Canada's website is from 2005-06.

The internal draft report says the government currently does not know enough about the country's water to properly manage it.

"Canada lacks sound information at a national scale on the major uses and user(s) of water," it says.

"National forecasting of water availability has never been done because traditionally our use of the resource was thought to be unlimited."

Canada has a fifth of the world's supply of fresh water, but only seven per cent of it is renewable. The rest comes from ice-age glaciers and underground aquifers.

One per cent of Canada's total water supply is renewed each year by precipitation, the report says.

Moreover, government data on the country's groundwater reserves is deemed "sparse and often inadequate."

That's in contrast to the United States, which has spent more than a decade mapping its underground water reserves. Canada shares aquifers with the U.S., and the report says: "Our lack of data places Canada at strategic disadvantage for bilateral negotiations with the U.S."

Through an email from his spokesman, Environment Minister John Baird said he welcomed the report's findings.

"This report is a one-stop shop document that can guide us toward ensuring that we get clean, safe water to Canadians, wherever they choose to live."

The report forecasts droughts in the Prairies and groundwater shortages in British Columbia and the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River basin.

There are already signs of water shortages in the Great Lakes. Lake Superior, the largest of the five, fell to its lowest level on record last September. Lakes Michigan and Huron were about 50 centimetres below their historical average levels last fall.

The report says a 0.08-to 1.18-metre drop in Great Lakes water levels costs the hydro-electric industry between $240 million and $350 million each year.

The report also warns of a "heightened risk" of showdowns between the provinces, and between Canada and the States, if the water supply dips too low.

Canada insists its water is not for sale. But a parched southern neighbour could ratchet up pressure to ship water south if its supply continues to dwindle.

Out-of-control suburban sprawl in the southern U.S. and agricultural water usage have spawned a water crisis that threatens to worsen in the future.

Atlanta's main water source, Lake Lanier, shrank to an all-time low last November. Lakes fed by the mighty Colorado River - which supplies water to more than 20 million Americans - were just half full last year. Los Angeles had its driest year on record.

The Environment Canada report is one in a string of foreboding federal studies on climate change.

Natural Resources Canada released a major study this spring predicting more frequent droughts, severe floods and wildfires, and declining water quality and quantity.

Last month, Health Canada released a 500-page report warning of heightened health problems as the climate changes, ranging from more heat-related illnesses and deaths to outbreaks of previously unknown infectious diseases.

Those reports were released late in the day, with little fanfare.

Tony Maas, a senior policy adviser at WWF Canada, said he's pleased the government is studying the impacts of water shortages.

"The fact that they're even taking this close a look at this issue is good news in my mind, because they've been away from the fresh-water scene for so long," he said.

Liberal MP Francis Scarpaleggia, the party's water critic, says Ottawa needs a junior water minister to focus attention on the issue.

Perfection?

What could this possibly mean for Tanner and other children with facial deformities if anything???

Would I even ever consider it if it were perfected and common enough down the road? Could this potentially mean he would have a "perfect" face? No, I would never consider doing it and no, Tanner's face is already perfect to us. If he chose to do this procedure on his own down the road, then that would be his choice, but I would not consider doing this unless the doctors strongly suggested it. Well, even then, I would fast my brains out to make sure it was what was right for Tanner. I would fast 3 times a week just to be 100% sure.

It sounds like a great potential for victims of animal attacks, but not for a cosmetic correction to look better. That's just my opinion.

Pictures to come

If I can figure out how to get pictures on my blog without writing from my computer, then there will be a lot of pictures that I'll upload of our super, fabulous weekend. We have had a great time. Amazing! Wonderful! Splendid! Fun! I don't think I've had such a great time in a while. I hope when my husband throws me a surprise 30th birthday party it will be just as great. That's a huge HUGE hint for those of you. I really want a surprise party in April when I turn 30. I've never had a surprise party at all and what a great occasion to finally have one right?????

Anyways, we have had a great weekend so far. We are looking forward to the next 2 days.

We ended up at my Aunt's house in Airdrie instead of at my MIL's. Long, unhappy story that I don't really need to repeat, but we are having a great time...other than being woken up every night by 2 or 3 trains. My aunt lives right by the tracks and it's so loud. I really need my small town place of residence...little noise. No airplanes, trains, traffic, sirens all night, drunken people yelling, car horns honking, car alarms going off. That is what I am looking forward to in a couple of nights. SILENCE! Pure silence. Ahhhhhh....

It was really funny that people asked me at my Mom's party how we were liking Raymond and we both answered the same every time...we LOVE it! It's glorious. Quiet, peaceful, relaxing, and calm. OH! and every one asked me in that way that you know they're asking for more information without trying to be insulting how I was doing...like I was pregnant. I had to laugh because I said I was doing wonderful and didn't say anything more. Oh, people...if they only knew...lol. I think we're getting to that stage where people kind of expect us to be having or trying to have another baby. Sometimes I think people need to just keep their opinions on something that is so personal and intimate to themselves...especially if you don't have a close relationship with that person. It would be like if you're bishop just randomly came up to you and asked if when you were going to have another baby because he thought it might be time. That might be a bad analogy, but hopefully the point comes across.

Well, I should be off to bed soon. Until later...

Fired

I know I haven't written in 2 days and so I'm firing myself....haa haaa, just kidding. Things here have been crazy and busy. Just a few stories to share. My Aunt Carolyn (some of you know who she is) fell last week and had a very very serious break in her shoulders. The doctors told her that although it was good that she didn't need surgery, there's a possibility she may never regain full range of motion. Which is almost devastating considering the fact that she enjoys quilting so much. So she's a little fragile right now and needs a lot of help, therefore she is living at my Mom's for 6-8 weeks. So for her to come to my Mom's party, my Mom felt that it would be better if she was in a wheelchair so people don't bump her and we can get her to the bathroom etc. So my Mom called up her work and asked them if she could borrow a wheel chair. Of course the ADORE my Mom and agreed right away. So when they brought it to my Mom's guess who decided that he needed to "ride" on it? That's right...Tanner. It was so cute. It reminded me of when I was younger and we would all argue over who was going to ride in my Dad's wheelchair and who was going to push Dad etc. It was a great memory.

We also went to Pizza Hut yesterday because my Aunt was sleeping and for those of you who know Tanner, know he has a hard time being quiet. So we took advantage of the buffet they have for lunch to keep Tanner out of the house and eat. While we were there Tanner informed me that he did NOT like this restaurant and that he wanted to go to McDonalds...which was right across the street. Then he told Matt who hadn't been at the table when he told me, that he LOVED this place. What a goof!

OH, and this is a common thing for Tanner while traveling...as we were driving into Vulcan, I asked Tanner, who was watching a movie in the car, if he needed to go pee. Of course he said no. I mean, who would want to stop and leave their beloved movie to pee???? So as we get 5 minutes past Vulcan, he says "I need to pee are we almost in Vulcan?" Of course I had to tell him that we already passed vulcan and that he would have to go on the side of the road. He refused this idea and said he needed to pee on a potty. I knew Mossleigh was coming up and so I asked if he could hold it (he held himself from Clareholm to Raymond one time). He said he could but then he asked 5 minutes later if we were there. So I knew the urgency of the situation. I had in the car a large water cup...a tupperware one. So I stopped the car, emptied the water and had him pee in the cup and dumped it out. He actually did it. So from now on I'm going to carry a small bucket in the car. Don't worry, I sanitized the cup and washed it out a few hundred times.

So that has been our little adventures for the last few days. I am getting ready for my Mom's party so I should go and get to the 3 salads I'm making. Until later or next time...

Keys ruin day

Yes, sad but true...

When I woke up this morning I was relatively happy. Then as I was getting ready to go VTing, I couldn't find my keys. This drives me totally insane and batty. I can not stand when I can't find my keys. This does not happen very often and I can usually find them within a few minutes. Today was a whole other case. So I was on edge all day. The reason I am a little paranoid right now was because I honestly believe that someone came into our house and stole our video camera when we had the door unlocked one time. I turned the house upside down...short of literally and could not find it. So I was upset that I couldn't find my keys because I wanted to lock up my house. Anyways, so all day I have been miserable because I couldn't find my keys. I know...a choice that I'm sure I regret and partly to blame on hormones...but nevertheless...grumpy.

Plus, while we were visiting teaching our one sister, Tanner was not nice to my friends little girl who have a very strong hate/love relationship. He was being such a brat. I won't be bringing him again. I try to get someone to watch him but sometimes it doesn't always work out.

When Matt came home, I politely and calmly informed him that I was on a very short fuse and when he asked why I told him. So he says to me "Are you sure you didn't leave them (the keys) in the car?" to which I reply "if I did, I couldn't look because you had the car today". So he happily went out and looked (I think it was to get away from me). They were in there! Thank goodness. Then I told him about the video camera and he said he would check in the car. So he went out a second time and of course it was there. I am so relieved. So needless to say, I am a bad person today for being so grumpy over something so trivial. Plus the fact that I can't call to ask Matt if he knows where they are was a little frustrating. So, I know tomorrow is a new day and I plan to make the best of it because it's Tanner's last swim class and we are going to Calgary!!!!!! I feel like it's Christmas or something. Tanner is so stinkin' giddy about it. Anyways, that's my day today. I am feeling much better now and think I'm going to make some chocolate milk and watch some Grey's.

Where are you???

My brain is not functioning on blogger mode like it usually is. I can think of a lot of things to say but for the last couple of days, not much. So maybe I'll just tell you what we've been up to.

Today, I decided that I am going to can peaches when I get back from my super awesome trip in Calgary.

My adopted Mom...not really adopted literally but in heart, Ann, is going to help me do them because I have no clue how to do them. I am soooo excited. I remember having tons and tons of peaches when I was younger. They are so yummy. I think I'm going to get a 20lb case and then when pears come in, I'll do a 20 lb case of them.

I only have about 32 jars and I don't really want to buy more. I have to buy a bunch of rims and seals because the lady that gave me most of hers, kept the lids on and they're all rusted. I got some last year to do my raspberry jam, but I don't want to buy more if I don't have to.

My raspberry jam is not going to be overly successful this year because we didn't get as many berries as we did last year. So I'll just do them in the small jars. Maybe if anyone has raspberries they would like to give to me????? lol.

So that's what I've been up to today...for the most part. I took Tanner to swimming, did some laundry before it rained, did the dishes, finished packing and went to work. Oh, and Tanner and I played too and we made peanut butter cookies. They are so yummy. Of course we had to put chocolate chips in them. Tanner loves to put chocolate chips in every cookie. Tomorrow, I'm going visiting teaching, taking Tanner to his second last swim class, and cleaning the bathroom. So, until tomorrow...

Culture and English

There is a culture everywhere you go and it is more and more evident to me as I go to gatherings. People in small towns are rooted in their history and their culture...their way of life so to speak. People have a certain way of doing things and way of life that is different from other places. The people take more pride in things here and genuinely care. They include you like you were family. There are different unspoken expectations in a certain culture or town. I always think of the theme song from the t.v. show Cheers...you wanna go where everyone knows your name. Though I am very aware of the outsidedness that I come from, I still feel like I am included in the moving forward of a new chapter.

Recently I was talking to a lady who home schools her children. We were talking about reading and writing because I was asking her if she had ever used the hooked on phonics system for her children. She hadn't but explained to me that she has her own cards (I'm assuming they are home schooled approved) that she uses to teach her children phonetic sounds. English is a very tricky language...can I just say that. She told me that she doesn't worry if her children don't know how to correctly spell a word or read. She feels it's more important to teach them the sounds of things and if her children come to her and ask her if luv says love, she tells them it does.

As I think about this more and more as Tanner is learning to read, I wonder if my child would struggle through school or life being taught that way. Are sounds more important than learning to actually spell correctly and sound words out? Of course you have to know the sounds each letter makes to sound words out that you're reading, but if a child spelt the word love l-u-v, would you correct them or just let it be? I guess each child is unique and every parent has their own belief on what does or doesn't work. I, myself, am shocked that Tanner had any interest in letters at such a young age and is now reading short, easy 4-5 word sentences (words like, cat, hat, rat, bat, ran, can, and, pig, dog etc). I never push him because the system he is using is a kindergarten level and he's only going into pre-school. I let him go at his own pace. He's only read the first 2 books out of 13 books to read at the kindergarten level. I just wonder if I shouldn't worry about if he uses sounds more than correct reading to actually read. I hope that makes sense. Anyways, it's just something I have been thinking about. As I re-read this paragraph, I think: 'read' can be used in 2 different ways but spelt the same. I like to read or I have read that book. How is that phonetically correct??? See, the English language is complicated. Maybe I'll teach Tanner french and we'll just all learn to speak french...lol.

This weekend was beautiful! Really hot. And I think I got either heat stroke or heat exhaustion, because I didn't go to church because I had a massive headache and then when it was gone, we went to dinner and a friends house and my headache came back. We walked over there in hot sun so maybe even that little bit made me sick again. Today, Tanner and I stayed inside the air conditioned house and practiced his letters...forming them and using words that start with the letter. He has these sheets that have the letters on them and then I have shapes that form each letter. So for example, the 2 big curved 'c' shaped ones together make the letter 'o'. Or two 'c' shaped ones make the letter 's'. Or two big straight ones form the letter 'H' or one straight one and one small curved one form the letter 'h'...well sord of. Anyways, it's something that the occupational therapist wants us to work on with him. He thinks it's fun and I know he's doing something that he needs to do without being pushed to do it. So in the end, we both win.

I am totally crazy and have packed our bags for this weekend at my Mom's. I am so stoked...I can't even tell you. I have a few things I still need to do. I like to make sure our house is clean before we leave so that when we come home, I can enjoy coming home to a clean house. It helps me feel more relaxed and calm when I come home. So I still have a few loads of laundry and I am cleaning the bathroom on Wednesday. Plus, we have to remember to pick our raspberries and dig up some potatoes for a salad and then water the garden Wednesday night before we leave. I could do it Thursday morning but I want to be able to enjoy my morning and not worry about that. So there you have it.

That's all for now. Until tomorrow.

Good intentions

I had great intentions to bring my camera to the primary swim party but I forgot. Alas, we still had a blast and we even payed and stayed a bit longer. Tanner is a little fish and he's getting pretty confident at swimming on his own without a life jacket on. He does not like the diving board anymore...which I'm not too sure what that's about. We were all pretty tired to do much after. Matt helped our friend, Chris, put the vinyl on his deck while Susanne and I visited and looked through the Sears wish book...yep, that's right. Christmas already! I hope everyone has a great sabbath. I am so utterly exhausted I can't even think straight.

Good night until tomorrow.

Is it even possible?

To be over happy? Lately, I just feel so so happy. Like more happy than I think I know how to handle or deal with. People keep asking me what I'm on and I just say that I'm high on life. Does that even makes sense?
I got an opportunity to talk about the gospel with one of my co-workers and that made me so grateful that I got to share some things with her. Anyways, I feel like I could spread the happiness around a bit so that's it for now.

Sewing

Today I went to the fabric store...D-A-N-G-E-R-O-U-S!!! I LOVE our little fabric store here. I wanted to look for some flannel backing for the blanket I'm going to make for Tanner's bed. I found some really adorable "I am a Child of God" flannel print fabric that I'm going to get once I get the top done. I am really excited to use the new to me sewing machine that Sharon gave me. I have to get some thread too. While I was in Lethbridge I also went to look at the fabric at Fabricland. I didn't find a lot there so maybe I'll look when we're in Calgary...if I have time. I am so excited to go up there and see my Aunt that I haven't seen in about 3 years. Plus, my other Aunt fell on Monday and broke her shoulder and is in a splint so I'm sure it will be nice for my Mom and other Aunt to have a little break to be able to get stuff done for the party. I LOVE parties. I am so much like my Mom in that way. I love seeing my family and playing games.

So not much else going on. It's suppose to be 31 degrees tomorrow. Which will be great for Tanner's Primary swim party. Then on Monday and Tuesday it's suppose to be 33. Holy Hotness! I hope I don't die from heat exhaustion. This medicine that I'm on right now makes me hot all the time so I am not looking forward to actually being hot on top of already feeling hot. Too bad I can't lay around in my swim suit all day. It's days like this that I wish I was a life guard and had a real reason to wear a swim suit all the time. It's too hot for anything else.

Well, that's it for now.
